Cross margin mechanics sharing collateral across perpetual futures positions
Cross margin is a risk mode that pools all collateral across a trader’s perpetual futures positions. Every open position draws from the same balance. Unrealized profit from winning trades can offset margin requirements for losing ones. This makes cross margin capital-efficient because you need less idle collateral per position.
The mechanism is straightforward: your wallet balance is the total collateral, and each position has a maintenance margin requirement. If a position moves against you, its margin consumption rises. But if another position moves in your favor, its unrealized PnL is counted as available collateral. The system nets gains against losses in real time.
This is not free efficiency. Contagion risk is the trade-off.
When a single position faces liquidation, the entire collateral pool is exposed. A sharp adverse move in one market can trigger a cascade. That liquidation reduces the pool, other positions then have less backing, their margin ratios tighten. If the move is violent enough, the whole portfolio can be wiped. Cross margin magnifies tail risk.
Binance implements cross margin as the default for its USDⓈ-M perpetual futures. Traders select "cross" in the position mode settings. The platform calculates the overall margin ratio as total wallet balance divided by total maintenance margin. When that ratio falls below 100%, liquidation begins. Binance uses the mark price, not the last traded price, to determine unrealized PnL. This prevents brief price spikes from triggering false liquidations.
Bybit offers cross margin under the "cross" option in its perpetual futures interface. It uses a portfolio-based approach where all positions in the same asset class share the collateral. Bybit’s liquidation engine checks the aggregate margin ratio. If the ratio drops below the maintenance threshold, the system starts closing the most underwater position first, prioritizing the rest of the account.
Hyperliquid takes cross margin further. It is an on-chain perpetual exchange. Cross margin there means all positions share a single collateral pool on the Hyperliquid L1. The exchange uses a unified margin model: unrealized PnL from any position counts toward the margin requirement of every other position. Liquidation is triggered when the account’s equity falls below the sum of all maintenance margins. Hyperliquid’s insurance fund covers any shortfall from liquidations, but the trader’s entire collateral is at risk first.
When should a trader choose cross margin despite the danger?
Cross margin suits strategies with correlated positions. If you hold long positions in BTC and ETH perpetuals and expect a broad market rally, cross margin lets gains in one leg support the other, and you need less total capital than isolated margin would require. It also works for delta-neutral setups. If you are long one perp and short another, the positions hedge each other. Cross margin nets the margin requirements. The risk of a cascade is lower when positions offset.
Do not use cross margin with uncorrelated or inversely correlated positions. If you are long BTC and short SOL, a sharp move in one direction can crush both - the losing position drains the pool, and the winning position’s gain may not compensate fast enough. Liquidation can hit before the hedge works.
Cross margin also fails for high-leverage scalpers. A single wrong entry at 50x leverage can take down the entire account. Isolated margin limits the damage to one position.
The choice depends on your portfolio structure and your tolerance for total wipeout. Cross margin is a tool for capital efficiency, not a safety feature. Use it when you understand exactly how your positions interact. Use isolated margin when you do not.
